While serving on a jury panel in the year 2018, the individual realized he needed to pursue legal recourse for himself after being raped in 2004.

“When I heard the people testifying, I could literally see myself in the identical scenario,” he explained post forfeiting his confidentiality privilege.

Following the court case, the currently 39-year-old from Norfolk’s Watton opted to notify local authorities again to disclose his perpetrator.

February 27, 2024, twenty long years following the assault, the offender from Suffolk’s Oulton Broad was given a term of an eight-year sentence in jail after being convicted of dual offenses of violation and a single charge of assault by penetration.

At the time, Dan had been seventeen when he came across then 21-year-old Shaun Gilder in Norwich in 2004, and their meeting became his initial romantic involvement.

On a Saturday evening in May that year, the couple had gone to a barbecue when the assailant consumed excessive alcohol and instructed Dan to transport him home.

At about midnight, the individual instructed Dan to pull over on a quiet road near the James Paget Hospital in Gorleston.

Gilder attacked Dan and caused significant internal harm which caused him being admitted to hospital on three occasions that season.

Deeply affected, Dan was managed to drive Gilder home before going back to his mom’s home.

“I remained in bed for hours thinking, ‘what has just happened? what was that?’,” he shared.

In September that year, Dan went to the authorities and detailed the attack.

Dan said he had given an account at the time, but it did not proceed any beyond because he was “in poor health at that juncture”.

Relatives and other family members did not know he was a member of the LGBTQ+ community, he mentioned.

“Society was distinct in those days,” he commented.

Presently, the survivor serves as a project manager for the government sector, but he was once engaged in a detention center, where he said he would often suppress emotions when inmates discussed their own abuse.

He added he was physically confronted on the job, which also resulted in traumatic recollections.

“Subsequently, during jury duty. Flashbacks back to the assault once more. It was a unceasing pattern that needed to stop,” he remarked.

The female witnesses who helped obtain a guilty verdict in the 2018 court case in which he was a panel member were “empowering”, as stated by Dan.

“It was just remarkable to see them appearing and providing testimony and addressing the challenging inquiries being directed at them,” he said.

“I held a position at Stansted Airport as an immigration officer at this time, and I had to take a three-week absence for health reasons.

“At that point I once more notified [the attack] to the law enforcement and I requested to advance the case for me, which they agreed to,” he added.

Disturbing Testimony

Law enforcement officers from the authorities were assigned to Dan’s case in the year 2018, and it advanced to a formal accusation and court case at the crown court in November of 2023.

Through his court submission, Dan described how he had been identified with complex post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) associated with the assault.

“I’ve experienced, and presently suffer, recurring contemplations of self-harm,” he wrote.

One in four of female adults and about 6% of adult men have been the victims of sexual violence, or attempted violation, based on the Crime Survey for England and Wales.

A recent study found that 44% of 180 individuals who were subjected to graphic evidence in legal settings reported symptoms consistent with PTSD.

“Previous traumatic events, psychological challenges and immediate stress responses during a trial can worsen traumatic impacts,” experts highlighted.

Back in 2004, Dan’s mother spoke to the perpetrator when he appeared to check on her son in the medical facility after Dan had disclosed to her what had occurred.

“There was a rage like a fire burning within me. I was so angry,” she stated.

The perpetrator departed and it was the last time she saw him.

When speaking to her son, she commented: “I experienced great pride of you for persisting with what you were convinced of and seeing it through. It was rightful vindication. You’d strived intensely.

“Mentally it had deeply affected on you and we could observe how you faced challenges.”

He mentioned his current work as an on-call firefighter for the local fire department had helped him with the healing process.

“Assisting the public has offered me something to concentrate on and find purpose in,” he said.

The survivor noted he now enjoyed his three dogs, mountain bikes and travelling.

Since May he has begun creating videos about his story and uploads them on online platforms, where he now has a following of 12,000 on TikTok.

“It has assisted a numerous others. The amount of direct communications I’ve had to indicate it has aided people is immense,” he commented. “{I’ve got to do
