Historical Information
Mr Comey was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013-2017 and was fired about four months into Donald Trump's first term as national leader. At the moment, he was directing an examination into Russian election interference and whether there were any links between Moscow and the election effort.
During his tenure, the director triggered a negative reaction from Democrats when he announced just immediately preceding the 2016 presidential election that he was examining political contender Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Indictments against the candidate were never brought, resulting in negative feedback from conservative politicians as well.

Government attorneys allege Mr Comey lied to US lawmakers during a congressional hearing in 2020 when he was being interrogated about both the previous examination as well as the Russia election probe. They claim he misled the Senate by stating he had not permitted a person at the FBI to leak to journalistic entities details about the agency probes.
Government lawyers also charge Mr Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to influence, obstruct and delay" the committee by giving misleading testimony to it.

"Our household have understood for a long time that there are consequences to challenging Donald Trump," he said. "We will not live on our knees."
"I'm innocent," he added. "Thus initiate a court case."
The charges against Mr Comey came after Trump shared on digital channels insisting on his chief prosecutor, the attorney general, take legal action against Mr Comey and other people.
