Marnus Labuschagne Omitted from Australian ODI Lineup Versus India
Labuschagne finds himself omitted from the three-game ODI series facing India, as in-form Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw receiving a unexpected inclusion.
Recent Form Lead to Exclusion
The right-hander was left out from the one-day international side following being dismissed for one in each of his two innings during the recent series against South Africa in August. The right-hander has a highest score of forty-seven in his most recent ten ODI batting appearances.
Labuschagne has played 68 ODIs and scored 1,871 ODI runs at an average of 34.64, but will now focus on earning a return to the Test side ahead of the Ashes starting in Perth on 21 November.
Renshaw's Return and Team Updates
There have been indications of a return to form with 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw scored a hundred for the Bulls in the identical match against Tasmania.
Renshaw is in line to make his first white-ball appearance in the upcoming series against India after previously being selected in an ODI squad in 2022.
Renshaw has played 14 Test matches with the last coming in India in 2023 but is also seeking a Test return as Australia seek a solution to their top-order woes.
Pace Returns and Injury News
Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc returns for the ODI series against India after taking a break since performing well for Australia in the clean sweep of West Indies in July.
BBL performer Mitch Owen might get his ODI debut after suffering a concussion in the build-up to Australia’s most recent 50-over series against South Africa.
ODI captain Pat Cummins is still unavailable as he aims to recover from a spinal issue in time to lead Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.
Squad Selection Strategy and Schedule
Australia have selected a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the upcoming Ashes series, although Glenn Maxwell will be absent for the five-game T20 series due to a wrist injury suffered in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will skipper both the ODI and T20 teams after scoring a hundred in the last match against New Zealand to secure a series clean sweep last week.
“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be player management through the later stages of the series as players get ready for the cricket season through domestic first-class matches,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an important period in the build towards the T20 World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously prepare specific players for the Test matches ahead.”
Australia’s three-game ODI series against India commences on 19 October in Perth, before the rivals play five T20 internationals from October 29.
