Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users purchasing such drugs should be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a reversion to original mass in about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Experts suggest the mechanism of the injections explains the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the medication explain a powerful return of appetite.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," described an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle management.
