Called “a national calamity,” prosecutors detailed a chilling account of the alleged assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
A Planned Attack
According to the district attorney’s office, Tyler Robinson grew consumed by hatred for Kirk and his political views. Authorities claim Robinson orchestrated the attack in a little more than a week after discovering Kirk would be appearing at Utah Valley University.
Digital Communications Expose Admission
Prosecutors say Robinson dispatched his housemate messages admitting to the crime. In a particular exchange, Robinson reportedly stated, “I seized the chance to take out Charlie Kirk and I’m going to take it.”
“Erase this exchange,” Robinson allegedly wrote in one message.
Murder Weapon Information
Authorities believe a bolt-action rifle belonging to Robinson’s grandparent was used in the killing. The weapon was later discovered in a nearby area wrapped in a towel.
Multiple bullets were recovered with the rifle, each marked with inflammatory phrases.
Political Reasons
Based on accounts from Robinson’s mother, the suspect had recently grown more political and started tilting toward progressive views, embracing LGBTQ+ rights.
Robinson had also started dating his roommate, a biological male who was undergoing a gender transition, which allegedly led to tension within his family.
Arrest and Charges
Robinson was arrested on September 12 and accused with aggravated murder. The district attorney stated they will pursue the capital punishment.
Law enforcement say Robinson’s own mother recognized him from media images of the suspect and notified authorities.
Legal Hearings
The suspect had an first hearing on Tuesday, with a preliminary proceeding scheduled for September 29.
Prosecutors emphasized that the information presented are merely accusations at this stage and recognized the grief of Kirk’s family.
“Like all murders, the needless taking of Charlie Kirk’s life has shattered the lives of those he cherished,” said the prosecutor.
