The English along with Wales Pitted in the Same Group for 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was overseen by rugby legends such as former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side together with their Welsh counterparts find themselves placed in an identical pool for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a major early clash in Australia. Completing the group in Pool F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This draw recalls their infamous meeting in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at Twickenham contributed to the English team's shock early exit.

Other Notable Group Pairings

The Irish alongside Scotland have likewise been drawn in a group once again, just as the situation from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, they claimed a convincing win, with their opponents unable to advance to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, who each made a strong impression as underdogs in the last World Cup, complete that Pool D.

Significantly, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from defending champions and top-ranked South Africa before the final, assuming the Springboks top their own group.

Tournament Ramifications

Should the pools conclude in line with the current world rankings, other leading contenders like the All Blacks and France would remain separated from both England and Ireland until the championship decider.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the remaining top-ranked nation on the same side of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Face Major Opener

Hosts Australia have been drawn together with their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Group A.

Australia will open the tournament in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a blockbuster fixture designed to launch the event.

Elsewhere, reigning champions the Springboks have been paired with the Azzurri, the Lelos and Romania. The French team are in a pool with Japan, 2031 hosts the United States and Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Los Pumas will take on Fiji, Los Leones and Canada as the World Cup expands to 24 teams from the 20 who took part in 2023.

This edition will introduce a last-16 stage for the first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

While the victor of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the game's biggest beasts early on, they will have to face the runner-up from Pool B – probably Italy – in the last 16.

Four of the other six pool winners will face a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
